NYX Matte Lipstick Review: Nude & Butter, Pure Red & Perfect Red

By Visitor Critique
Hi all,

Just came from the store with x2 pairs of NYX Matte lipstick and ran to my dressing table to test the shades I bought. My task is to find two perfect colours from the variety of neutrals and reds. So, I've picked up two shades of matte reds - Perfect Red & Pure Red, and two tones of matte neutrals - Nude & Butter.

Since it's my first time of using this brand, I've had some particular discoveries about NYX Matte Lipstick - both positive and negative.

1. NYX Matte Lipstick does not have any strong scent, it's almost scent-free.
2. It has a very nice creamy texture allowing the lipstick to lay perfectly on the lips.
3. The lipstick stays on quite long (at least a couple of hours).
4. It does not dry out the lips. Some reviews claim the opposite, however, I would say it is not as drying as other lipstick on the market.
5. There is a good selection of colours.
6. NYX Matter lipstick is very affordable.

Still, NYX Matte lipstick colours don't always match to the swatches. If you are buying online, don't only look at the colour, but also pay attention to the full name of the shade. Otherwise, you risk ending up receiving an unexpected shade that you have had no intention buying. And also, any product by NYX is basically sold in Target but very rarely in other local stores, so it is very hard to find all the variety of shades in store.

Overall, I have an excellent first impression about this lipstick and it feels pleasant wearing it on. So, let's get started with comparing two pairs of this promising matte lipstick.

NEUTRALS

COMPARING: NYX Matte Lipstick NUDE and NYX Matte Lipstick BUTTER

Winner: NYX Matte Lipstick BUTTER

At first sight, I did not even want to buy the Butter shade, as it looked just brownish while the Nude with a hint of peach looked very attractive. After putting both lipsticks on, the first impression just vanished.

In fact, Nude colour really disappointed me. It is very unnatural and just too pale. By wearing it I had a feeling I have covered my lips with some paint and it looked flaky.

The below image from @bloglilapink shows exactly how the lips look wearing Matte NudeThough it looks nice on the image, because it shows only the cropped area of lips, it is absolutely unattractive on the face. Because of a single reason - it is too pale. I think there are two reasons why you would wear this shade. You either have very pale skin (but I don't really get why would you want to lighten your look even more with this lipstick?!), or you can wear it for a selfie. I'm saying this because this lipstick looks just AWESOME on selfie photos - it just gives a very natural soft touch to the face.

On a positive note, I fell in love with the NYX Matte Butter lipstick. I've never thought it would look so good on lips, but it really does. Famous Instagrammer @pakousbeauty wears this shade in the below image and it is gorgeous. You can see that it is not 100% matte, it does have some shine. However, it looks really good.

It's not an easy-to-wear colour, because it is not completely neutral. It is an awesome shade, but if you are searching for neutral lipstick, I would not recommend it to you. Not everyone will like it, but if you do, it will become your favourite product for your lippies.

REDS

COMPARING: NYX Matte Lipstick PERFECT RED and NYX Matte Lipstick PURE RED

Red is not just a red, it is the most powerful color to wear on lips. Every shade of red has its own meaning and that is why you need to be really careful when picking up the right shade of this dangerous lipstick color.

It's not easy to find a perfect red. I've been looking for a red lipstick for a while and still can't decide which shade I like the most. It varies from light orange-leaning tones to pure red (I like to call it blood red), from bluish red to cherry shades. Though beauty trends change all the time, like plum and cherry has become the most frequently worn lipstick colours of 2015, pure red remains in demand always. So, this is what I am actually looking for - the pure red lipstick with no orange or blu
e hues. To find it, I compared two red colors of NYX matte lipstick - Pure Red and Perfect Red.

There is no visible difference between these two shades - neither on this image nor from the lipstick swatches on the online shop. It is true that you can be misguided by the swatches on NYX website, at least for these two lipsticks. Actually, the swatch for the Perfect Red matches more to the Pure Red. However, if you read carefully the full name of the colour, it does say that it is an orange-leaning tone. If you like orange red, this is a nice pick for you, you can even try the Indie Flick for a much more dramatic look.

However, as I am looking for a solid red, the shade that is the closest to the blood colour, I'll give my preference to the Perfect Red. I think this is the middle tone between orange red and blue red.

So, the winner is the NYX Matte Lipstick PERFECT RED.
